What’s In An Opinion?

Often times I come across posts that I am compelled to “give my opinion.”  Many times, my opinions are challenged.  Take climate change (aka global warming), I choose to believe the data is flawed and the ones telling me that the warming of the planet is more dangerous to me than to Radical Islamic Terrorism — okay, so they don’t say Islamic, I just threw that in for effect.  So, I choose to not believe what they are telling me, regardless of how many charts and graphs they show me.

“Just look at the graph, dude!”  As though all the data is factual.

Or, when I state something about faith in a One True God and I get a response similar to, “but you can’t see god so you have no proof,” or “but there are so many gods to choose from, how do you know your’s is the one?”  Um, personal faith.  Someone could just say that they have a different perspective instead of attacking me for my faith or trying to convert me to some other way of thinking.

I’m not looking for a debate, I’m looking for opinion and perspective.  If I wanted an argument, I’d treat my wife with disrespect — I’m sure that would do it.

I think if you’re an Opinionated Man, everyone accepts your HarsH ReaLiTy as is and it doesn’t necessarily require a debate–though they may be there, I don’t see many debates on his blog.  I enjoy Jason’s blog, even when I disagree with an opinion but I’m less likely to debate him, or anyone else for that matter, even though I may comment my opinion.  I’m not there to debate because it’s their blog, their perspective and their opinion.  I do my best to never disrespect the blogger by challenging them in their environment.  I’ve gotten caught up in the back and forth from time-to-time but only because I’ve allowed myself to get sucked into it.  I don’t have to be right, even if I think I am unless I’m in my world.

You see, my opinion, based on my perspective, is always right for me.  There is only One who can change my perspective.

I believe in freedom of speech.  So, if you want to leave your opinion, feel free (keep it clean, always).  Don’t be hatin’.  Otherwise, go find yourself a debate.

In my opinion, the Earth is round and it travels around the Sun; and, Pluto is still a planet.

Where Are They?

Jay Cassie Cheer Nov 14How many times have you found a post or blog that you like, click follow, and then never hear from them again?

Occasionally, like this morning, I go to the Blogs I Follow list and click on different blogs just to see what they’re up to.  Often, I see that they have not posted in the past 2 to 6 months–I wonder why?  Did something happen to them?  Did life get in the way?  Should I secretly mourn they’re passing?  I know I took about a month off between posts to take care of things in my life but I didn’t go away, I still read other posts.

Now, just as everyone doesn’t like all of my posts, sometimes I don’t like all of someone else’s.  We’re that way.  We like what we like, when we like it.  But that doesn’t mean I’m not interested in a blog overall.  I am, otherwise, why would I expect to see someone?  Why else would I look for their perspective?

At one point, they captured my attention but now they’re gone.

Shane, or whoever you are, come back.  Oh!  What’s that shiny thing over there?  Is that another blog I might be interested in?

Jay 🙂

One More Night

One More Night

A shorter story by Jay LeBorgne © 2014

The boy aloft in the crow’s nest calls out, “land ahead,” as the ship breaks from three days of fog.  The sun is long set–I can see the shoreline aglow from the beach fires welcoming this long weary crew.  None as weary as her First Officer, his last night at sea.  The last night with this smelly, fine, crackerjack crew.

The Captain sleeps while I dream.  I dream of Abigail, my love of near a quarter century.  My love for life and the reason for my existence.  She waits for one more night.  I am as elated as I am tired.

The crew ready.

“Helmsman, Right 10 Degrees Rudder,” I bellow though the wind does not warrant such a voice.

“Rudder 10 Degrees Right, Sir,” he responds sharply.

I am tired, too tired to continue anything but dream of the life that awaits me with my beloved Abigail.

“Chief, prepare sails for anchor.”

“Aye, sir,” he growls before he barks his orders to the seamen.

All I can see is her light ashen hair blowing in the breeze that I struggle to hear over the commands.  I stand erect just beside the wheel, the helmsman starts to whistle a bawdy tune.  My mind snaps to attention to avoid allowing the tune to defile the vision of my beloved Abigail.  Time has stopped for me but the sails are furled.

“She’s ready, Lieutenant,” the Chief almost whispers.

“Thank you, Chief.  All hands bring ship to anchor!”

She is ready.  “Let go!” I shout for the final time.

The anchor runs to coastal depth until it hits sand.  The ship slowly rests to drift.  Waters calm.

“Set the watch,” commands the Chief in his less-than-mellow tone.  “Crew to muster.”

Unexpectedly the men gather in a loose group in front of me.  The Chief speaks softly, “Sir, we would like to say how much we’ll be missin’ you as First Mate.  You’ve been a fair commander, Sir…well, we just wanted to let you know, Sir.”  The Chief was slightly teary-eyed.  He is a fine old sailor.

“Well, thank you, Chief.”  I attempt to choke back my emotions.  “I too, would like to extend my gratitude to each and every one of you men.  I’ve been at this a lifetime and you are the finest crew an officer could ever hope to have under his command.  Each of you made me the officer that I am.  Thank you.  And I mean every word.  It is one thing to be the leader of men but it also takes good men like yourselves for me to be that leader.  Carry on, Chief.  Good night, men.”

“Fair winds and following seas, Sir,” they respond in well-practiced unison.  They all depart to their places.  I cannot understand their mumblings.

After briefing the Captain and a farewell toast with him, I lay to my stateroom and make my final journal entry.

Ships anchored awaiting morning tide.  All hands present and accounted for.  All is well.

Lieutenant William Dunlop Smithson, First Officer, Sailing Ship Oak Leaf Cluster

This the 5th Day of June in the year of Our Lord, Eighteen Hundred Ninety-five

I doubt I will sleep soundly.  The ship turns toward the shore and again and through my portal I see the beach fires burning, lighting an otherwise dark land.  The stars are finally visible, the air crisp with a soft wind.

And Abigail’s ashen hair wisps across her face as she smiles brightly.  Her hazel eyes glimmer in the sunlight…

One more night.

The Kings of Fortune County (preview)

Well, here I go.  I’m not one to put my stuff out there before it is ready but I’ve had several requests for a taste of my first #book to be published, which I hope to have accomplished by the end of the year.

You can find a sample at my wordpress website:  http://1stclassdocumentservices.com/the-kings-of-fortune-county/

Remember, it is a work in progress but I am so enjoying this creative outlet.

Why Don’t the Leaves Count?

The Earth is losing weight.  The Earth is losing approximately 50,000 tonnes (metric ton) per year according to Jesus Diaz’ article, “Why Is Earth Getting 50,000 Tonnes Lighter Each Year?”  A metric ton weighs less than a ton so I’m not really sure if this is as serious as it might seem.

With the loss of hydrogen (H) and helium (He) the Earth loses mass each year.  Apparently, the loss of helium is quite a concern because it would adversely affect our infinity for mylar balloons.  No, that’s not true.  The loss of helium, helium-3 (rare) and helium-4 (abundant) which has many uses in the science and health care industries as stated in “The Importance of Helium and the Helium Shortage,” would adversely affect some medical instruments.

With the Earth’s atmosphere losing approximately 95,000 tonnes of H and about 1,600 tonnes of He, you would think that would affect our orbit around the Sun but it doesn’t.  You might think that with the Earth’s core burning up the inner earth that we’d lose even more mass but it doesn’t.

Okay, so about 40,000 tonnes of minute stardust particles fall to the earth from somewhere out there and that’s where they get their weight difference.  They discount everything on the Earth as having been transformed from whatever the Earth is made of so there can be no change.  Houses are made of wood, people are made from people…I’m assuming that what “they” are telling me is that all the minerals in the earth are sucked up into plants at the same weight because of growth, as the minerals weight in the ground.  Therefore, nothing has changed only transformed.  Well, what about the leaves?

My yard has at least 50+ trees, bushes, flowering and various assorted plants.  Some grass but mostly ground cover (weeds) take up the rest of the space.  Here it is near the end of October and there are almost as many leaves on the ground as there are remaining on the trees.  Now I understand that leaves on the trees transform to leaves on the ground but by spring they will be dirt.  Yes, dirt.  Dirt weighs more than leaves.  I blow leaves in the fall and shovel the dirt in the spring.  I can physically feel the difference.  And, what about all those cities that archeologists have to dig up?  How did they get underground in the first place, if not for dirt, dirt created by decaying plants?  If the Earth’s mass is decreasing, why is there more dirt?

Every year when I have to rake or blow leaves I can only believe that leaves have something to do with the mass of the Earth–stardust or not.

What’s your story?

When it comes to telling your story, do you know what experiences you have that will tell the world about what made you who you are?

I read an article earlier today about an answer Mike “Dirty Jobs” Rowe gave in response to an interview question.  It had to do with not following your passion in life if it doesn’t prove successful in sustaining your life (of course that’s my take on it).

I’ve already proven to myself that my passion for writing stories and painting pictures will NEVER pay the bills, it shall remain a minor focus, part time at best.  There are a few reasons for this.  First, I work a little over 40 hours per week (no complaints, I’m blessed to have a low-paying job while others struggle to get work).  Second, although I have been writing for many years, I have not been properly trained in literature (specifically, creative writing) and therefore, will not appeal to very many (outside of my favorite people–very common folks).  My audience is and will remain limited.  And then, there’s the fact that it is important for me to follow God’s path for me with life, family and friends.  There is no guarantee that being an author is in my future but I will give it my best shot and see what happens.

After reading Mike’s response, I remembered when a friend asked me why I ever thought I could be a writer and what in the world would I know enough to write about.  I thought about my experiences in life (1) and how that could be a factor in helping me write (there are many stories, my friends).  I told my friend that would not be the problem.  The problem would be how I could accomplish it.

I’ve studied a few things here and there but I haven’t taken writing courses, yet.  In jobs as analyst and for reports writing, the style is very different from writing a book–the “government style guide” is quite different. With the knowledge I have, it would probably be easier to write a how-to book than a story book but I’m not in this for easy, I’m in it for creativity sake–an outlet for what’s inside my mind.  I already have a few stories that I’m working on.  What I have found in my research is that I can utilize skills from jobs and experiences I’ve had over the years, coupled with human observation, to put into characters.  Also in my research, it has been told to me that I should, “write how I speak,” and “just let it flow because you or someone else can fix it later.”  So, that’s my plan or was my plan.

Recently, I became a publisher.  I knew nothing about creating ebooks or printed books.  I had a couple of unknown writers provide me their books a few months ago; to learn about the processes, I bought ebooks and searched the internet for articles and blogs, and I viewed a few YouTube videos for information on self-publishing.  As of yesterday, I have three books with several sales on Amazon.com, in Kindle format and one of those on Createspace for print.  Oh, and I have this here blog website.  I had to learn to set up a website, too and it only took something I already possessed, my administration and self-management skills.

I believe that I have enough life experiences to create many stories.  I promise, I will apply syntax in a way that will make some cringe and others glad that they don’t have to struggle to read.  And, I will tell my stories, one page at a time.

So, what’s your story?  How can you use your experiences to tell it?  Just don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t tell it.
